ABOUT YOUR EVENING BARCELONA BIKE TOUR
Evening Barcelona Bike Tour starts by meeting your local guide in front of the main post office of Barcelona. Get a full introductory speech about your bike tour, after which you will get to choose the right bike for your adventure! Your first scenic route takes you on a ride along the beach toward Barcelona’s Inner Harbor and Barceloneta. Feel the evening breeze in your hair as you meander alongside this gorgeous scenic route.
All along the tour and on short stops, your expert guide will talk about the history and anecdotes concerning the areas you are visiting. Learn how Barceloneta, in the Ciutat Vella neighborhood, was built during the 18th century on a triangular-shaped piece of land that is full of narrow, mysterious alleys, giving Barcelona its charm and appeal. See how the streets are lined with small homes that once housed the areas fishermen. Today, due to its unique charm, it is one of the city’s most popular and visited districts.
Next stop on your ride – the Olympic Village, in the San Marti district. Your tour guide will explain the transformation of this cool neighborhood, which once hosted athletes from around the world for the 1992 Olympic Games. This building project turned a derelict, industrial area into a residential district full of parks, beaches, restaurants and bars. Did you know that before 1992, there was no beach in Barcelona? Yes! Barcelonata is a man made piece of paradise that is now part of the city’s modern day social culture.
During your small group bike tour, your guide will suggest that you take your time, stop, take plenty of pictures whenever you want, and enjoy the ride at your own, comfortable pace. It is not a race, it is a ride. And it is meant to be enjoyed every step of the way – leave this up to your guide and the picturesque backdrop!
ARC DE TRIOMF AND MERCAT DEL BORNYour bike tour continues to the iconic Arc de Triomf. This monument is the gateway to the
Parc de la Ciutadella and one of Barcelona’s most treasured landmarks. Locals take their green space quite seriously with over 10% of the city dedicated to parks, and this number is growing rapidly! The Mercat del Born stands on the ruins that were once part of the Ribera district, destroyed in the early 18th century when Catalonia was defeated in the War of Succession. It dates back to 1873, when it was constructed out of cast iron columns and adorned with metallic horses. It was used as a market place from 1878 until 1971.
Arc de Triomf with the lush green park beyond, provides the perfect background for memorable photos. While you are here, and throughout the entire tour, feel free to ask your tour guide any questions you may have. Your guide’s knowledge of the city and sites will make your exclusive tour even more valuable, interesting, and unforgettable.
Next stop on the bike tour is the famous Mercat del Born, the largest covered square in Europe and one of the most important buildings in Barcelona even today. Learn how it was used as a market place for a hundred years. On your exclusive bike tour, you will ride through, from the Parc del la Ciutadella to Passeig del Born, where you can see the exposed subterranean ruins and surrounding museum areas. From this amazing market place museum, your tour guide will take you to a special place huddled in with artists’ workshops and ancient ruins.
During this exciting ride you and your group will stop for a glass of local cava together with a few tapas. Cava is the official name for the Spanish, sparkling white wine. The cozy atmosphere of a late Spanish evening, great food and wine combined with interesting conversation with your fellow travelers will bring your tour of Barcelona to an unforgettable end.
