ABOUT TAPAS To this day, all over Spain, these traditional bite-sized delicacies are prepared and shared around the table among friends. Tapas doesn’t refer simply to food but to a lifestyle. The friendly nature of Spaniards comes out in this wonderful tradition of finger foods and drinks.
Tapas can include not only bread and ham, but tasty bites of seafood, shellfish, olives, pastries, egg dishes, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and sauces . On your tour, be sure to sample some
pinchos, patatas bravas and croquetas de jamón. Enjoyed with a refreshing cocktail, you will savor every delectable bite. Pass them around to share as is the tradition in Spain.
There are many stories to explain the origins of tapas, one of which is the tale that King Alfonso X got so ill, that afterwards he could only eat small amounts of food, hence the bite sized tapas. Another is that a piece of ham was placed over a glass of sherry in the past, in order to keep flies from entering the sherry. The ham stuck and they became known as tapas. Whatever the origins, one thing is for sure – Spanish cuisine is one of the best around and is definitely worth experiencing.
